20 SNP councillors walk out in ‘Nazi’ row

A crucial budget meeting to decide on council tax increases in North Lanarkshire was disrupted yesterday when 20 SNP councillors walked out after claims a senior Labour councillor accused them of being "nationalist socialists".

The walkout came as the Labour-controlled North Lanarkshire Council prepared to vote on whether to freeze its council tax.

SNP leader Richard Lyle claimed senior Labour councillor Tommy Morgan made his comment as he delivered the SNP's "alternative budget".

Trump has made us look like a nation of parochial bumblers

Money talks; and with people like Trump it bellows and blusters.

Why did Alex Salmond meet the Trumpeteers the day before the unprecedented decision to call in the planning application. Well, again, it is quite in order for the local MP/MSP to meet with the people responsible for a billion pound housing development with a nice golf course attached. Was he showing favouritism? Well, if you mean did he favour the development, the answer is manifestly "yes".

Did he know when he met Trump's men that the planning decision was going to be called in the next day? Probably not, though I'm sure he knew it was going to be called in soon by Swinney. Had he known the exact timing of the action I suspect he would have rescheduled his meeting with the Trump gang for appearance's sake.

Wyeth Will Pursue Claim for Damages Resulting From Teva ...

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa., Dec. 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, a division of Wyeth (NYSE: WYE) , today announced it will pursue a patent infringement claim for lost profits and other damages against Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, Inc. resulting from Teva's launch of a pantoprazole tablet -- a generic version of Wyeth's PROTONIX(R).

"Teva has not disputed that its product infringes the United States PROTONIX compound patent exclusively licensed to Wyeth by Altana, recently acquired by Nycomed," says Lawrence V. Stein, Senior Vice President and General Counsel, Wyeth. "We believe our patent is valid and enforceable and that Teva will be required to compensate Wyeth for the substantial damages caused by Teva's violation of our patent rights."

On September 6, 2007 the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey denied Wyeth and Altana's motion for a preliminary injunction against the launch of a generic pantoprazole tablet by Teva and Sun Pharmaceuticals prior to resolution of a pending patent infringement proceeding.

David Swanson: Obamessives And Obamicans

Now, I suspect that a lot of Obama supporters think he is more progressive than he is, imagine he's far less militaristic and corporate than he says he is in interviews, debates, and in his second book. But my friend had read his first book, and she also knew what is needed to get past the corporate media guardians of U.S. election booths. She, as I suspect many are doing, put her hope in the notion that Obama is faking his corporate militarism in order to get past GE, Fox, Viacom, and Disney, and once he's elected he'll be a real progressive. I'm putting what little hope I have in a slightly different place. My hope is that the people filling the streets in Richmond will continue to fill the streets after Obama moves into the White House. My hope is that a movement can arise that will force Obama to be what we need him to be.

A voyage of discovery

Six months have passed since the opening of the Cairo Children's Cancer Hospital (CCHE), a project that epitomises Egyptians' collective effort to provide free treatment for those in need through making charitable donations. The hospital, known as "57357" after the number of its bank account to which donations can be sent, now treats some 760 patients, 40 of whom are from Arab countries.

Built on half the allocated plot of land in the Sayeda Zeinab district in Cairo, leaving the other half free for gardens, the hospital's unique design stands out from its surroundings like a ship of hope. Its beauty is reflected inside the hospital, which is a comfortable place for parents, while at the same time providing high-quality treatment for children with cancer.

"We are trying to make the hospital look like a big toy, or a cheerful place for children, because cancer is a very cruel disease for them," says Sherif Abul-Naga, director of Academic Affairs, Research, Training and International Outreach at the Hospital, as well as professor of paediatric hematology and oncology at the National Cancer Institute at Cairo University.

Killeen Daily Herald

There could be a new addition to the Killeen family soon.

At its workshop Tuesday, the Killeen City Council discussed the possibility of adding a new sister city.

Members of the Killeen Sister Cities Inc. nonprofit organization asked the city to consider adding San Juan, Puerto Rico, as a sister city.

Council members agreed for the city to pursue the possibility of adding San Juan as a sister city and said it would be easiest to keep it under the current Sister City organization.

"There's nothing wrong with looking at the opportunities," Councilman Billy Workman said.

Currently, the city has one sister city: Osan, South Korea; Central Texas representatives visit Osan annually and representatives from Korea visit Killeen annually.
